Welcome to Women’s College, Calcutta for an enriching educational experience. As the Principal of this college it’s my proud privilege to welcome you all. With profound gratitude I thank you for visiting our college website. 

Women’s College, Calcutta was established on 2nd July, 1937, by a group of dedicated scholars under the visionary leadership of the founder Dr. D. L. De, M.A. Ph.D. (London), with a view to advancing the scope of higher education of women, irrespective of their socio-economic backgrounds.  It is the vision of the college to fulfill this mission and to realize its motto “Vidya Vindatey Amritam”. 

The college got affiliated to the University of Calcutta on 27th April, 1940. It shifted from 204, Cornwallis Street, Kolkata-700006 to the present premises at P-29, Kshirode Vidyavinode Avenue, Kolkata-700003 in 1982 under the leadership and  initiatives taken by the then principal Smt. Hena Maitra. Women’s College, Calcutta has duly been recognized by the University Grants Commission under the UGC Act, Section 2(f), and 12(B). The college has been accredited as a B++ grade college by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council), Bangalore, in two consecutive cycles in 2007 and 2016 respectively. 

 Shree Ramakrishna Paramahansadeb, Maa Saradamani Devi, Swami Vivekananda, Sister Nivedita, and eminent dramatists like Girish Chandra Ghosh and Kshirode Prosad Vidyavinode, illustrious painters like Jamini Roy and Nandalal Basu had stayed at Baghbazar and contributed towards its all-round spiritual, social and cultural growth. Women’s College, Calcutta is a part of this great legacy. It is the only government aided Girls’ Day College’ in this locality. Our college is successfully conducting seven post graduate courses under the University of Calcutta. We have highly competent experienced faculties and well disciplined students worthy to make their mark in all spheres of life. We are proud of our inclusive ethos where we set high standard and expectation from our students to achieve their very best.  The college successfully runs an NGO, Srijan, Centre for Community Welfare, which started on 9th July, 2003 (government registration in 2005) with the goal of holistic development of underprivileged children living in nearby slum. We also have a commendable alumnae association which serves as a link between the past and the present students of the college. Many of our alumnae are well placed in different sectors - in academics, corporate, government jobs and business, etc. Women’s College, Calcutta has maintained very good record in Calcutta University examination both in the UG and PG sections. Pass percentage in all the departments is excellent. Academic flexibility, curricular enrichment, feedback system and effective teaching-learning evaluation strategies to assess the learning outcomes of students are the pillars on which the college continues to excel in academics and other activities. By its quality teaching learning strategies coupled with technological upgradation and skill-based approach, the college has achieved very high pass percentage of students across all programmes  with several students receiving first class and ranks every year. At Women’s College Calcutta we continuously strive for educational excellence. Our teaching-learning process is constantly evolving and with the changing times, we aspire to create global leaders. Our College takes pride in having a very good infrastructure, teaching-learning resources, ICT facilities, library, laboratory, community centre, Generator Set, Computers, Audio-visual Equipments, Staff Quarters, NCC (unit inauguration in  process), NSS, IGNOU Study Centre, Distance Education Centre, Canteen, etc. which make learning conducive and joyful. We follow a transparent admission procedure according to merit. We also adhere to the reservation policy of the Higher Education Department. A huge number of various scholarships are there to support meritorious but needy students. Students get all information and notification timely through the website along with the conventional notice board. This institution has developed a habitual practice of parent-teacher meet, organizing seminars/workshops/conferences /invited talks, students’ seminar, alumnae meet, study tours, career counselling, psychological counselling, etc. Our mission is in developing well rounded individuals who demonstrate resilience, determination, and strength of character. As the college enters into the new academic session, we welcome all aspiring young minds to join this vibrant and dynamic great family of Women’s College, Calcutta to be ignited with more knowledge, to be transformed as empowered women to serve humanity.

I take this opportunity to appreciate the presence and contribution of each member of our staff, both Teaching and Non-Teaching, in making the college what it is today. My humble gratitude to the Hon’ble President of our GB, all our esteemed GB Members, Hon’ble PG Coordinator, Hon’ble PG Body Founder Chairperson, and to all our retired Teaching and Non-Teaching staff for guiding and inspiring us. To all the stakeholders of this college a huge ‘thank you’.
