About

The Department of English of Women’s College, Calcutta is one of the earliest departments in the college to receive affiliation from the University of Calcutta in the year 1940. The department presently has four substantive teachers and offers honours and general courses to the students of the undergraduate section. Since 2015, the department has introduced the PG course in English which is also affiliated to the University of Calcutta.

Admission to the department is much sought after by aspiring entrants. The department formulates strict norms for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The success rate of students at the University Examinations is commendable. What is most gratifying is the success rate of the pass out students. Most of our students pursue higher studies in universities in West Bengal and other states. The students get fair chances of placement, whether in academic or corporate sector, after successful completion of University courses. There are some distinguished alumni in the department of English.

We have a vibrant student profile. We have held students’ seminar, cultural events on a regular basis. Our students have written, directed and performed plays based on adaptations. Students have participated in inter college competitions, and won accolades for their craft and essays. We have singers, dancers, poets, orators, actors, musicians in our team. In fact, the photographs of the faculty members were taken by one of our students who is now following her dream of becoming a professional photographer!

The department also organises special lectures and talks on a regular basis. Particular attention is given to groom the critical faculty of the students by organising student seminars and presentations from time to time and critical exposure is also provided by way of lectures delivered by eminent scholars in literary field.
