Geography as a domain is a one of a kind mixes of the essential and sociologies. It gives a wide scope of data and understanding that is fundamental for comprehending a world. Women's College, Calcutta, Geography department was established in the year 2003-04 as an order for the undergrad level. From that point forward it has kept up a convention of high scholarly and co-curricular brilliance. In a world tested by lessening resources, a population explosion, and expanding strains over social qualities, financial turn of events and natural issues, Geography as an order investigates the elements of worldwide change and their nearby encounters. The course attempts to bestow a geographical way to deal with the understudies consequently to make them equipped for clarifying parts of common and social condition where they live and in noting some basic ecological, practical, socio-social and political inquiries. In the quest for comprehending the space where one live, we attempt to mix both the conventional and present-day methodological instruments in our study halls. Along these lines it includes the conventional methodology of hands on work, planning and spatial examination, supplemented by the most recent measurable strategies, cartography, and Geographical Information System (GIS) with special reference to Arc GIS software.
Apart from the B.A. / B.Sc. and M.A. /M.Sc. courses under University of Calcutta, the department runs PG courses (M.A. /M.Sc. in Geography) affiliated by Vidyasagar University (Directorate of Distance Education). Bagbazar Women’s College is one of the women’s college under Calcutta University which is providing bachelor and masters courses of Geography for a long period of time. The department of Geography established in the year 2003-04. The department offers both General (from academic session 2003-04) and Honours (from academic session 2006-07) course to the under Graduate Students. Our students are our pride. The enthusiasm, intelligence, dedication are our strength which is incomparable.

E-learning is real-time learning. In synchronous learning, the learners and the teacher are online and interact at the same time from different locations. They deliver and receive the learning resources via mobile, video conference, internet or chat. In this type of learning the participants can share their ideas during the session and interact with each other and they get detailed queries and solutions. Synchronous e-learning is gaining popularity because of improved technology and internet bandwidth capabilities.source of e-learning at the department are virtual classroom,audio and video conferencing chat webinars application sharing messaging instantly,e-learning activity at department the e-learning in the department includes engaging the students in course-related activities is critical to their success, however, students also benefit – both academically and socially – from less formal interaction in their courses, particularly when they cannot connect in-person.
In the practical classes, teachers use lectures, audio visuals and instruments to instruct and demonstrate students. They are given hands on training on how to use each instrument. They are introduced to Topographical Sheets that are integral to the study of interrelationships between the physical and cultural features in the maps. They are trained in computer cartography, GIS and remote sensing tools. Field work is an essential component of Geography curriculum. Field work emphasises direct experience through observation and sharpening of interpretation skills providing avenues for empirically substantiating what is learnt in the classroom. We have the survey instruments (dumpy level, prismatic compass, plane table, theodolite abney level, clinometer and planimeter), distance measuring instruments (laser distance meter and rotameter), weather condition measuring instruments (barometer six’s, thermometer, hygrometer and rain gauge) and remote sensing (GPS, aerial photograph, satellite imagery mirror stereoscope, pocket stereoscope and GIS software (21st century and QGIS). Study privilege of the rocks and minerals is also there.
Students need to acquire core skills but they also want to build their own education. That's what the co-curriculum provides. For many students, it’s the co-curriculum that offers the most interesting, compelling, and institutionally-defining educational experiences. The co-curriculum does what the standard academic curriculum generally does not. It is developmental, transformative, and future-focused. It is also experiential, offering authentic, hands-on opportunities to hone skills, put ideas into practice, and showcase achievements of potential interest to employers.The best practices within the department includes the yearly excursions, celebration of the different educational events like World Environmental day, World Wetland day etc. and cultural events. Students are taken for excursion and study tour as part of innovative teaching approaches and is also included into the syllabus to know the nature and its physical processes closely. The college has conducted many educational tours to study different extreme landscapes like Dooars, Bishnupur, and Santiniketan etc. As this kind of field trips are important to help bridge the gap between education and hands-on experience. Field trips are crucial for every student to acquire increased knowledge, culture and hands-on experience thus are made compulsory for every year and for every student.Beside this e-wall magazine entitled Eco-Bulletin has been published which is the 1st joint initiative by the faculty members and students of the Department of Geography. The initiative has been taken to celebrate World Environment Day 2020 and to raise the importance of the healthy and green environment in human lives, to solve the issues of the environment by implementing some positive environmental actions and thoughts and the theme of this year is Time for Nature.
As per this approach, teaching- learning methods in geography must focus on helping learner acquire knowledge and skills in an interactive environment. It is important that the process of learning must promote the spirit of inquiry and creativity among both learners and teachers.
The recent yearly student’s achievement has been shown in a graph. The graph shows the results of part-I students of the academic session 2017-2018.From this group two students held first class-Disha Mondal-123 (61.5%) and Soumita Ghosh-120 (60%).123 students out of 200 are those who achieved the highest marks in this year.
The next graph is showing the result of part-II students of the session 2018-2019. From this group nine students held first class numbers. They are Somasree Ghosh-127 (63.5%), Shreya Sarkar, Sayani Ghosh-126 (63%), Soumita Ghosh-125 (62.5%), Kahani Das, Bhagyashree Saha, Sanchita Roy-124 (62%), Sweta Dey-123 (61.5%), Disha Mondal-120 (60%).127 students out of 200 were the highest marks achieved in this year.
The below graph is showing the results of the students of semester-I under CBCS system. Ten students from this group has scored first class marks.
The graph below is showing results of the semester-III students under CBCS system. 23 students from this group have scored first class number. Three students achieved >70% numbers. Sohini Dhar-75.69%, Srijoni Gupta-70.59%, Sanchita Saha-70.07% and Sohini Dhar achieved the highest marks as well.The next graph is showing the results of the students of semester-II under CBCS system. 28 students of this group achieved first class score. Remarkably Sohini Dhar achieved >70%. Her percentage is 73.32% which is highest score as well.
The students of Geography department participate in other activities along with studying. Sanchita Roy and Shreyasi Ghosh from the batch 2017-2020 participated in a CAREER AND VALUE ORIENTATION WORKSHOP entitled “MIND GYM FOR YOUNG MINDS” organized by SRI SARADA MATH-RASIK BHITA on 24-2-2019. Indrani Sarkar from batch 2017-2020 completed an educational course in 2018 conducted by HEWLETTE PACKARD ENTERPRISE Education Services at HPE Nodal Program Partner Center.
School of Water Resources Engineering, Jadavpur University has organised an “International Conference on Sustainable Water Resources Management under Changed Climate” in joint collaboration with Department of Geography, Women’s College, Calcutta and National Institute of Technology (NIT), Durgapur held from 13th -15th March, 2020. Dr. Mahua Das, Principal of Women’s College, Calcutta had acted as a patron and Dr. Malabika Biswas Roy, Assistant Professor of Department of Geography, Women’s College, Calcutta, had was the convener of this conference.
This 3 daylong conference played a unique forum for exchange of innovative ideas, technical expertise for the sustainable solution in the field of water resources. It includes keynote address from Academicians, invited lectures and paper presentation by faculties, research scholars and students. The conference has seen the convergence of renowned experts, research scholars and students from various parts of India and abroad on water resources and pollution treatment. The three-day conference comprised 6 keynote lectures, 7 invited lectures with 3-4 speakers per session. The conference was structured to foster the discussion between participants around the core themes of water resources management. This was achieved by hosting several technical sessions, poster presentations, Skype lectures etc. From day 1 to day 3, 8 technical sessions has been organised having more than 10 paper presenters in each session which was chaired by the experts. A poster session has also been organised where more than 20 posters have been evaluated by the expert committee.
About 300 participants were registered for the conference which includes UG/PG students, researchers from different colleges and universities all over the India mainly from New Delhi, Hyderabad, Pune, Orissa, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh etc. and renowned officers from the governmental sectors. Different non-governmental companies have also participated in this event to promote their technologies on water resource management studies.
An outstanding number of students/ researchers were participated from various parts of the world with full of enthusiasm which became a major reason of the grand success of this event.
A conference Abstract Volume containing all the selected abstracts of the participants, key note addresses and invited lectures has been released during the inaugural session of the conference.
A National Book Chapter having UGC approved ISBN number will be published as a conference proceeding.
An Edited Volume in Springer Publication will also be published containing all high quality research articles on water resources management.

Speech by the Convener Dr. Malabika Biswas Roy
Dr. Malabika Biswas Roy is now currently working as an Assistant Professor the department of Geography in the Women’s College Calcutta. She has obtained many prestigious awards like RULA International Innovation and Betterment Award for Young Scientist of the Year (2018), Nawab Zain Yar Jung Bahadur Memorial Prize (2017), Young Scientist of the Year Award (2016) and Bharat Jyoti Award (2014). She has an expertise in Wetland Studies, Hydrology, Fluvial Geomorphology, Forest Hydrology, Biodiversity, Water Quality Modeling and Impact of Climate Change on Wetland System. She has over 16 years of teaching and research experience and provide doctoral guidance to students. She has attended many conferences and has more than 60 national and international journal papers. She has given a number of lectures in national and international conferences as an invited speaker and Co-chaired many session on issues related to water resources. Currently she acted as an invited speaker in 2nd World Congress on Climate Change, held in Berlin, Germany. She has field experience in various studies related to environmental studies and is currently acting as the Co-investigator of Central DST, NRDMS funded project on coastal vulnerability entitled “Scientific Assessment of Coastal Vulnerability and Sustainable Ecosystem Management under Changed Climate Scenario”. She has also completed two UGC Minor and one UGC Major Research projects. She has done 16 training course-refresher Course (3-ASC, Jadavpur University), orientation course (1- ASC, Jadavpur University) and other different educational courses (12) effectively. At present she is the member of many learned Societies of national and international level. She was also the convener of the International Conference on Sustainable Water Resources Management under Changed Climate, 2020 organized by School of Water Resources Engineering Jadavpur University in collaboration with Women’s College Calcutta and National Institute of Technology, Durgapur. She is the reviewer of two reputed journal Wetland (Springer) and Environment, Development and Sustainability (Springer).
Shri Arnab Ghosh participated in the two day workshop on implementation of CBCS in UG studies in geography at Shri Shikshayatan College 2019. Shri. Pravakar Kanjilal made active participation in one day workshop on Geography (Hons.) practical CBCS SYLLABUS (SEM-II), Organised by department of Geography, Raidighi College, South 24 Parganas and activelyparticipation in the UGC sponsored national seminar on Inclusive Education: Policy, practice and prospects held on 21st – 22nd March, 2015 at Satyapriya Roy College of education, Kolkata.

The conceptualization of quality of life in terms of geography is based on two assumptions. The first assumption is that the quality of life consists of two dimensions: subjective and objective. The subjective is known as ‘well-being’, while the objective is the proposed term ‘quality of place’. The second assumption is based on the recognition that quality of life is always a spatial dimension. The concept of quality of life is closely linked with the concept of a good life; geographers enriched this concept by using the term ‘good place’ as a place in which the conditions are created for a good life. The quality of life for individuals in terms of a good place overlaps with the quality of life in society, namely the societal quality of life.
The student will learn important leadership and management skills by participating in a variety of programs that are organised in college premises. This include planning campus-wide academic, cultural, arts, or social events, as well as working on various aspects of student publications, participating in sporting events, attending leadership seminars and conferences, and organizing community service projects. The department organise yearly excursions, hold seminars and conferences. National seminar has also been conducted in the year 2011. Recently conducted the International Conference on Sustainable water Resources Management in collaboration with School of Water Resources Engineering, Jadavpur University and National Institute of Technology (NIT), Durgapur in the month of March 2020. The department also published an e-wall magazine this year named Eco-Bulletin as a notion to increase awareness against the environmental protection and management.
