Department of Chemistry was established in 2008-2009 academic session in women’s College, Calcutta. We teach Chemistry as a Generic Elective subject for the students pursuing their Honours course in the Department of Food and Nutrition.
Our faculty members are passionate teachers and committed to academics. This includes presenting papers in different national and international seminars, published research papers in reputed international journals, acting as expert in the poster presentation session in seminars.
Chemistry is being taught in this college as an allied subject with Food and Nutrition honours course, as an outcome of this, we find some of our alumnae act as dietician in different reputed nursing homes and hospitals. Some of them are successfully running nutritional consultancy of their own, some students emerge out as good researchers, good teachers etc.
Department of Chemistry has started online teaching learning process through Google meet platform from the year 2020. Students are also able to convey their queries and contact with the faculty through WhatsApp.
In our small department, presently we have only one permanent faculty (Associate Professor). We follow lecture method for teaching along with practical classes as prescribed by University of Calcutta, the university, to which our college is affiliated. We do emphasis individual student to develop her laboratory skill. Other than this, we adopted students’ participatory seminar, quiz contest, as creative methods of teaching to make study more interesting to the students. The department also arrange regular class test for each semester students and remedial classes as per the students’ need.

Apart from class room teaching we organize students’ seminar where the students get opportunity to show their presentation skill among others. Quiz contest for each semester students are arranged for nurturing the students making them aware about the surrounding scenario side by side their university curriculum.We also encourage our students to take part in different co-curricular activities in our college. They also participate in different inter-college competitions.
