Department of PsychologyAbout the DepartmentThe department of psychology offers an undergraduate three years Honours course and Generic Electives to other Honours courses. The department was established in academic session 2006-2007 with the purpose of catering the knowledge of behavioural science. Psychology, as a subject enrich an individual to observe, analyse, control and predict behaviour of others and self. It is unique by its own characteristics of dealing with living human beings, which is beneficial for students and society. The department was started with a general degree course (Under 1+1+1 System), with the student strength of thirteen. Honours course was introduced in the year 2007. At present student strength is fifty four in second year (4th Sem) and forty four (2nd Sem) in first year of undergraduate course under CBCS system. There is a consistent improvement in the results of the students, at least 30% of them securing first class every year. In the Year of 2015, a new wing has opened. With the strength of twenty students the department has started Post Graduate Program in Applied Psychology from the session 2015-2016 under University of Calcutta with specialization in: 1) Organizational and Environmental Psychology, 2) Stress management and Community Psychology. Recently PG students are also getting exposure to Human Resource Management as another area of specialization. Current strength of PG students in second year (4th Sem) is twenty two. The motto of this department is to prepare students both academically and professionally. Therefore, apart from UG and PG courses, the department offers an UGC sponsored certificate course of six months on Psychometric Analysis and Psychotherapy, for preparing the departmental students for further professional training, for last two years. There is also a Counseling Cell functioning under convenorship of Dr. Manimala Mukherjee, since 2007. The following table shows the number of students appeared and secured above and below 60% marks in Core course3 (CC3) and Core Course 4 (CC4) in second semester of UG Program (Honours): Teaching LearningThe classroom teaching is not top down but is done in an interactive way through the use of chalk and talk, power point presentation, presenting cases from clinic and daily life settings. Students are also encouraged to present topics through students’ seminar. Other than these, mentoring for special requirement and remedial classes are organized. The department has also the provision for Online teaching mode with the authenticated web service provided by College.
