About the Department

The Department of English of Women’s College, Calcutta is one of the earliest departments in the college to receive affiliation from the University of Calcutta in the year 1940. The department presently has four substantive teachers and offers honours and general courses to the students of the undergraduate section. Since 2015, the department has introduced the PG course in English which is also affiliated to the University of Calcutta.

Admission to the department is much sought after by aspiring entrants. The department formulates strict norms for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The success rate of students at the University Examinations is commendable. What is most gratifying is the success rate of the pass out students. Most of our students pursue higher studies in universities in West Bengal and other states. The students get fair chances of placement, whether in academic or corporate sector, after successful completion of University courses.
