Department of EnglishAbout the DepartmentThe Department of English of Women’s College, Calcutta is one of the earliest departments in the college to receive affiliation from the University of Calcutta in the year 1940. The department presently has four substantive teachers and offers honours and general courses to the students of the undergraduate section. Since 2015, the department has introduced the PG course in English which is also affiliated to the University of Calcutta. Admission to the department is much sought after by aspiring entrants. The department formulates strict norms for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The success rate of students at the University Examinations is commendable. What is most gratifying is the success rate of the pass out students. Most of our students pursue higher studies in universities in West Bengal and other states. The students get fair chances of placement, whether in academic or corporate sector, after successful completion of University courses. There are some distinguished alumni in the department of English. Faculty ProfileSubhra Bandyopadhyay is the Head of the department. She has a teaching experience of 24 years. She has completed her MPhil from the University of Calcutta. Her areas of interest include 19th century Bengal, Women’s writing, Elizabethan and Victorian poetry. She has participated in SAM workshop organised by the college in 2009. She has completed a UGC-funded Minor Research Project on ‘19th Century Bengali Women with Reference to the Works of Vidyasagar’. Debamitra Kar has been teaching in this college since 2010. She received her PhD Degree for her thesis on ‘Conflict Zone Literature’ from the Dept of English, University of Calcutta in2019. Her area of interest includes New Historicism, Conflict and peace studies, Trauma and memory literature, and Performance Theory. She has presented papers at both national and international seminars and has published articles in scholarly journals. She has received a UGC travel grant to present paper in the 9th Pan-European conference in Internal Relations, held in Sicily, from 23-26 September, 2015. She has also prepared modules for the UG English general and honours courses of Netaji Subhash Open University and for the UGC e-pathsala project. Sudipta Gupta joined the college in 2015. She has already proved her academic acuity by presenting papers both in national and international conferences. She has published papers in reputed journals. She actively participates in different college activities and has become members of different TC committees. She aspires to pursue PhD in the coming session. Her areas of interest include Gender studies and Indian English Literature and Cultural Studies. Md Nehajul SK is the youngest member of the team. He obtained both his Graduation and Master’s degrees with first class from the Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh in 2010 and 2012 respectively. Qualified NET in English and both NET-JRF and SLET in Education. He has joined Women’s College, Calcutta in September, 2017. He takes interest in Commonwealth Literature, Romantic Literature and Shakespeare’s plays. He teaches select sections of UG syllabus with special interest in Indian Writing in English. Departmental ActivitiesThe department of English and Political Science jointly organised a UGC-sponsored national Level seminar on ‘The Future of Multiculturalism’, in collaboration with ICCR, held at ICCR, on and from 29 August to 30 August 2012. The department also organises special lectures and talks on a regular basis. We have a vibrant student profile. We have held students’ seminar, cultural events on a regular basis. Our students have written, directed and performed plays based on adaptations. Students have participated in inter college competitions, and won accolades for their craft and essays. We have singers, dancers, poets, orators, actors, musicians in our team. In fact, the photographs of the faculty members were taken by one of our students who is now following her dream of becoming a professional photographer! During the pandemic period when physical classes are suspended, our students are participating in online classes through google classroom and google meet. Our interactions never stopped.
